This monochromatic oil painting by John Henry Twachtman captures the immense power of Niagara Falls with loose, expressive brushwork and subtle tonal gradations, reflecting his American Impressionist style.
John Henry Twachtman, an American painter and printmaker, is recognised for his contributions to American Impressionism. Born in 1853, he developed a distinctive style characterised by its tonalist qualities and atmospheric effects. Twachtman studied at the Académie Julian in Paris, where he was exposed to Impressionist techniques, but he adapted these to his own sensibilities, often focusing on subtle variations in light and colour. He was a member of the Ten American Painters, a group of artists who seceded from the Society of American Artists in 1897 to exhibit their work independently. His work often depicted scenes from nature, particularly landscapes around his home in Greenwich, Connecticut. He died in 1902. 'Niagara' presents a monochromatic study of the famous waterfall. The composition emphasises the immense power and movement of the water as it cascades downwards. Twachtman's brushwork is loose and expressive, capturing the dynamic energy of the falls. The limited palette enhances the sense of atmosphere, with subtle gradations of tone suggesting mist and spray. The painting reflects Twachtman's interest in capturing transient effects of light and weather, a hallmark of his Impressionist approach.
