A seventeenth-century portrait etching of Nicolas de Netz, Bishop of Orleans, by Jean Morin after Philippe de Champaigne.
This portrait of Nicolas de Netz, Bishop of Orleans, is a fine example of the printmaking output of Jean Morin. Active in Paris during the seventeenth century, Morin gained recognition for his technical skill in combining etching with the burin to achieve subtle tonal variations. This work is based on a painting by Philippe de Champaigne, a contemporary of Morin who was highly regarded for his austere and precise portraiture.
The composition is contained within an octagonal frame, a device frequently employed in the period to provide a sense of architectural structure to the portrait. The Latin inscription surrounding the frame identifies the sitter and his ecclesiastical status. Morin uses a dense network of lines to model the features of the Bishop, capturing the texture of his clerical garments and the fur trim of his vestments. The background is rendered with a cross-hatched pattern, which pushes the figure forward and creates a sense of depth without relying on complex spatial settings.
Morin was known for his ability to translate the painterly qualities of his subjects into the graphic medium. By varying the pressure and direction of his lines, he suggests the soft quality of the skin and the weight of the fabric. This print reflects the formal portraiture conventions of the French Baroque, where the sitter is presented with a sense of gravity and intellectual composure. The work remains a clear record of the collaboration between painter and printmaker, demonstrating the methods used to disseminate the likenesses of prominent figures in seventeenth-century France. The print is a study in monochromatic control, relying on the interplay of light and shadow to define the form of the Bishop.
