A classic Yokohama-e woodblock print by Utagawa Yoshitora depicting a meeting between a Japanese courtesan and Western visitors at the Gankirō teahouse.
This woodblock print by Utagawa Yoshitora captures a scene at the Gankirō, a prominent teahouse in the treaty port of Yokohama. During the mid-nineteenth century, the opening of Japan to international trade prompted a specific genre of art known as Yokohama-e. These prints documented the arrival of foreigners and the resulting cultural exchanges within the city.
The composition features a Japanese courtesan interacting with Western men, likely merchants or naval officers, dressed in military-style uniforms. The artist employs the characteristic flat perspective and bold outlines typical of the Utagawa school. The courtesan wears a kimono decorated with wave patterns, while the men are depicted with the facial hair and hats that were novel sights to the Japanese public at the time. The architectural setting of the Gankirō provides a structured backdrop, with the interior spaces and balcony rendered in a clear, linear fashion.
Yoshitora was a prolific student of Utagawa Kuniyoshi and became known for his depictions of foreign subjects. His work provides a visual record of the rapid social changes occurring in Japan during the Bakumatsu period. The colour palette relies on traditional woodblock pigments, including indigo blues and earthy tones, which have been preserved with clarity. This print offers a view into the curiosity and observation that defined the early encounters between Japanese citizens and Western visitors in Yokohama.
