This woodblock print by Hasegawa Sadanobu depicts a winter evening in Kyoto. The composition focuses on the Shijo Bridge, where figures traverse the span beneath umbrellas, shielding themselves from the falling snow. The scene captures the quiet atmosphere of the city, with the Yamato tea-house visible across the water in the Nawate Dori district. Sadanobu, a prominent figure in the Kamigata school of printmaking, often documented the specific urban geography of Kyoto, distinguishing his work from the more common Edo-centric subjects of his contemporaries.
The print employs a muted palette, dominated by deep indigo tones for the night sky and the river, contrasted against the white of the snow-covered rooftops. The artist uses a balanced arrangement of architectural elements and human figures to guide the viewer across the bridge and toward the distant buildings.
