A serene ink wash painting by Mei Qing, depicting the Nine Dragon Pool with cascading water and weathered rock formations.
Mei Qing, a prominent figure of the Huangshan School during the early Qing dynasty, produced this ink and light colour work depicting the Nine Dragon Pool. The composition centres on a cascading waterfall, framed by the rounded, weathered rock formations characteristic of the Huangshan mountains. The artist employs a delicate ink wash technique to suggest the weight and texture of the stone, while lighter, dry brushwork defines the foliage and the figures seated in the lower left corner.
The figures, rendered with minimal detail, provide a sense of scale and human presence within the vast natural environment. Their contemplative posture reflects the traditional scholarly pursuit of harmony with nature. The waterfall itself is depicted through rhythmic, vertical lines that contrast with the soft, rounded contours of the surrounding cliffs. This interplay between fluid motion and static mass creates a balanced visual experience.
Mei Qing was known for his deep connection to the Huangshan region, often returning to its peaks for inspiration. His approach to ink wash painting prioritised the expression of personal observation over rigid adherence to classical models. The subtle application of colour, particularly in the trees, adds a gentle warmth to the otherwise monochromatic palette. The inclusion of calligraphy in the upper left corner integrates the literary and visual arts, a hallmark of the literati tradition. This print captures the atmospheric quality of the original, preserving the nuances of the ink tones and the deliberate spacing that defines the work. It remains a representative example of the seventeenth-century Chinese aesthetic, where the focus lies in the capture of spirit and natural rhythm rather than precise topographical accuracy.
