A minimalist mezzotint print by Yōzō Hamaguchi, featuring a precise row of cherries against a deep, velvety black background.
Yōzō Hamaguchi is widely recognised for his mastery of the mezzotint process, a demanding printmaking technique that relies on the gradual scraping and burnishing of a roughened copper plate to create subtle gradations of light and shadow. In this work, the artist presents a precise arrangement of cherries against a near-total black background. The deep, velvety darkness is characteristic of the mezzotint medium, which allows for a dramatic contrast between the void and the illuminated subjects.
The composition is deceptively simple. Nineteen cherries are aligned in a horizontal row, while a single cherry sits isolated below, creating a quiet tension within the frame. The cherries themselves are rendered with a tactile quality, their surfaces appearing rounded and slightly luminous. Hamaguchi avoids unnecessary detail, focusing instead on the essential form and the interplay of light upon the fruit. The stems are depicted with thin, delicate lines that provide a sense of fragility to the overall arrangement.
Hamaguchi spent much of his career in Paris, where he refined his technical approach to printmaking. His work often explores the quietude of everyday objects, elevating them through a rigorous application of tone and texture. By limiting his palette to the deep black of the background and the saturated red of the fruit, he directs the viewer to observe the subtle variations in shape and placement. This print demonstrates his ability to transform a mundane subject into a study of light and space. The work remains a clear example of his disciplined aesthetic, where the physical process of printmaking is inseparable from the final visual result.
