A fine etching by Gabriel Huquier, serving as the title page for a collection of fountain designs by François Boucher, featuring characteristic Rococo scrollwork and putti.
This etching serves as the title page for the 'Recueil de Fontaines', a collection of designs for garden fountains conceived by François Boucher. Gabriel Huquier, a prominent printmaker and art dealer in eighteenth-century Paris, executed the engraving. The composition displays the characteristic asymmetry and fluid curves of the Rococo style. A central cartouche, framed by elaborate, shell-like scrollwork, contains the title and attribution to Boucher, who held the position of Peintre du Roy.
Two putti flank the cartouche, their forms rendered with soft, rounded contours that contrast against the rigid, architectural elements of the fountain base. One figure reaches upward, holding a floral spray, while the other rests upon the stone structure, clutching an arrow. The background suggests a formal garden setting, with hints of topiary and masonry providing a sense of depth. Huquier employs a variety of line weights to distinguish between the textures of the stone, the soft skin of the figures, and the delicate foliage.
Such prints were widely circulated among designers, architects, and craftsmen of the period. They provided a visual vocabulary for the decorative arts, influencing the production of metalwork, ceramics, and interior furnishings. The work reflects the French taste for ornamental excess and the integration of classical motifs into domestic and garden design. By translating Boucher's drawings into print, Huquier ensured the dissemination of these aesthetic concepts across Europe. The precision of the line work demonstrates the technical skill required to capture the lightness and movement inherent in the Rococo aesthetic, making this piece a representative example of mid-eighteenth-century print culture.
