This woodblock print is part of the series Sixty-nine Stations of the Kisokaido, a collaborative project between Utagawa Hiroshige and Keisai Eisen. The Kisokaido was an inland route connecting Edo to Kyoto, distinct from the coastal Tokaido road. This specific print depicts the station of Shinmachi, situated in present-day Gunma Prefecture.

Hiroshige employs a balanced composition to guide the viewer through the scene. A winding river occupies the foreground, framed by steep, verdant embankments that create a sense of depth. The middle ground features a cluster of pine trees atop a small hill, a recurring motif in Hiroshige's work that provides a vertical anchor against the horizontal expanse of the road. In the distance, travellers with straw hats and baskets navigate the path, their small scale emphasising the vastness of the terrain. A simple wooden bridge spans the water, leading the eye toward the distant mountains.

The colour palette relies on muted earth tones, soft yellows, and deep blues, typical of the printing techniques of the period.
