A classic Ukiyo-e woodblock print by Katsushika Hokusai, depicting a traveller on horseback at the Okabe station along the historic Tokaido road.
This woodblock print by Katsushika Hokusai depicts a scene from the Tokaido road, the primary route connecting Edo and Kyoto during the Edo period. As part of his series documenting the fifty-three stations along this path, the work captures a moment of travel and daily life. The composition features a traveller mounted on a horse, accompanied by an attendant, navigating the terrain near Okabe.
Hokusai employs a distinct visual language, utilising clear outlines and a controlled palette to define the figures and the surrounding environment. The horse, central to the image, is rendered with attention to its posture, while the human figures exhibit the expressive, somewhat caricatured features often found in Hokusai's earlier work. The background includes simplified natural elements, such as water and vegetation, which provide context without overwhelming the primary subjects.
The print reflects the popularity of travel-themed imagery in Japanese art of the period, catering to a public fascinated by the geography and customs of their country. The use of colour blocks, characteristic of the Ukiyo-e tradition, creates a sense of order and clarity. The red horizontal bands at the top and bottom of the frame serve as decorative borders, framing the narrative within a structured space. This piece offers a glimpse into the historical travel culture of Japan, presented through the technical precision of the woodblock medium. It remains a representative example of how artists of the era documented the physical and social geography of the Tokaido route.
