A striking etching from Goya's Los Caprichos series, depicting a woman caught by grotesque, winged figures in a critique of societal entrapment.
No te escaparás, or You Will Not Escape, is plate 72 from Francisco de Goya's celebrated series Los Caprichos. Published in 1799, this collection of eighty prints functions as a biting critique of the social, political, and religious structures of late eighteenth-century Spain. Goya employs the medium of etching and aquatint to create a stark, atmospheric contrast between the light-toned figure of the woman and the dark, grotesque creatures surrounding her.
The composition depicts a young woman in a light dress, appearing to dance or flee, while being physically restrained by a cluster of winged, monstrous figures. These creatures, typical of Goya's visual vocabulary, represent the irrationality and moral decay he perceived in his contemporary society. The woman's expression is one of resignation rather than terror, suggesting a commentary on the inescapable nature of societal expectations or the entrapment of individuals within corrupt systems. The use of aquatint provides a soft, grey wash that grounds the figures in an ambiguous space, focusing the viewer's attention on the interaction between the human and the monstrous.
As a master of printmaking, Goya used these works to explore themes of superstition, hypocrisy, and human folly. The technical execution demonstrates his ability to manipulate tone and line to convey psychological tension. This print remains a clear example of his departure from traditional court painting toward a more personal, critical mode of expression. By blending elements of caricature with a sophisticated understanding of human anatomy and movement, Goya creates a scene that is both visually arresting and intellectually challenging. The work invites observation of the artist's technical skill and his unflinching gaze at the darker aspects of the human condition.
