A refined surimono woodblock print by Yashima Gakutei, depicting a nobleman focused on the art of calligraphy.
This woodblock print by Yashima Gakutei belongs to the genre of surimono, which were privately commissioned works often exchanged among poets and artists. Gakutei, a student of Totoya Hokkei and Katsushika Hokusai, became known for his refined technique and the use of high-quality materials, such as metallic pigments and embossing, which are characteristic of this exclusive format.
The composition depicts a nobleman engaged in the act of calligraphy. He is shown from behind, kneeling before a low table. His attire is notable for its bold, geometric pattern of large dark circles overlaid on a lighter ground, demonstrating the artist's attention to textile design. The figure holds a brush, poised over a sheet of paper, while a brush stand and inkstone sit nearby. The background is kept minimal, allowing the focus to remain on the figure and the accompanying calligraphic inscriptions.
Surimono prints were produced in limited numbers for a sophisticated audience. They frequently combined poetry with visual imagery, as seen here with the Japanese text integrated into the composition. The print exhibits the precise line work and balanced colour palette typical of Gakutei's output during the early nineteenth century. The border features a subtle, repeating floral motif, which frames the central scene without distracting from the primary subject. This work provides a glimpse into the cultural practices of the Edo period, where the mastery of calligraphy was a highly regarded skill among the educated classes. The use of soft, muted tones creates a sense of quiet concentration, reflecting the meditative nature of the task performed by the subject.
