Description

A woodblock print by Katsushika Hokusai depicting clam gatherers at work on the tidal flats of Noboto, from the series One Thousand Pictures of the Sea.

Noboto at Shimōsa is a woodblock print from the series One Thousand Pictures of the Sea (Chie no umi), produced by Katsushika Hokusai during the 1830s. This series explores the relationship between the Japanese people and the coastal waters, focusing on the daily activities of those who lived by the shore. In this composition, Hokusai depicts the clam-gathering industry at Noboto, a coastal area in the Shimōsa Province.

The scene is organised into distinct horizontal bands. The foreground features a group of workers, their figures rendered with simple, functional lines, as they harvest shellfish from the tidal flats. Their conical hats and bent postures create a rhythmic repetition across the sandy shore. The middle ground transitions to a cluster of thatched-roof dwellings nestled against a grassy, sloping hill. A single boat sails on the calm water, providing a sense of scale and quiet movement.

Hokusai employs a controlled palette, dominated by shades of blue for the water and sky, contrasted with the earthy yellows and greens of the coastal terrain. The use of Prussian blue, a pigment that had recently become available in Japan, allows for the subtle gradations seen in the sky and the depth of the sea. The composition is balanced, with the activity of the workers providing a human element to the natural environment. The print demonstrates Hokusai's ability to observe and record the specificities of regional labour, presenting the scene with clarity and precision. This work is a fine example of the artist's late-career interest in the intersection of topography and human industry, captured through the medium of the woodblock print.

Artist Biography

Katsushika Hokusai

Katsushika Hokusai was a visionary Japanese artist whose influence stretched far beyond his lifetime. Born in 1760 in Edo (modern-day Tokyo), Hokusai became world-renowned for his mastery of ukiyo-e woodblock prints and paintings. His most iconic work, The Great Wave off Kanagawa, is instantly recognisable across the globe and embodies his lifelong fascination with the power of nature. Hokusai’s ability to capture the dynamic tension between beauty and impermanence is a hallmark of his style, deeply rooted in Japanese aesthetics and Buddhist philosophy.

Throughout his prolific career, Hokusai produced thousands of prints, sketches and illustrated books. He continually reinvented his style and identity, even adopting over 30 different artist names as his work evolved. His bold compositions, innovative use of perspective and striking colour palettes redefined Japanese printmaking. Hokusai's famed series Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji showcases not just technical mastery, but a spiritual reverence for landscape and everyday life. His work depicted everything from serene rural scenes to mythological creatures and bustling cityscapes.

Hokusai's legacy transcended Japan, profoundly shaping Western art during the 19th century through the movement known as Japonisme. Artists like Monet, Van Gogh and Whistler drew direct inspiration from his compositions and sensibilities. Today, Hokusai is celebrated not only as one of Japan’s greatest artists, but as a bridge between Eastern and Western visual culture. His art continues to captivate modern audiences with its fluid lines, narrative depth and timeless exploration of the human connection to nature.
