A geometric composition by Roy Lichtenstein that reinterprets the visual language of De Stijl through his signature Ben-Day dot technique.
Nonobjective II, created by Roy Lichtenstein in 1964, represents a departure from his well-known comic book imagery. In this work, Lichtenstein engages with the visual language of De Stijl and the abstract compositions of Piet Mondrian. The canvas is divided by bold, black lines that create a grid-like structure, framing blocks of primary colour and neutral tones.
Lichtenstein employs his signature Ben-Day dot technique within the grey rectangular section, a method he typically used to mimic the mechanical printing processes of commercial media. By applying this technique to a non-representational, geometric subject, he questions the boundaries between high art and mass-produced imagery. The composition relies on the tension between the flat, opaque fields of blue, red, and white, and the textured appearance of the dotted area.
This piece demonstrates Lichtenstein's interest in the history of modern art. Rather than rejecting abstraction, he adopts its formal elements and subjects them to his own stylistic filters. The result is a work that appears mechanical and precise, yet remains rooted in the painterly tradition. The use of Magna, an acrylic resin paint, allows for the sharp, clean edges that define the geometric shapes. The work invites viewers to consider how style and technique alter the perception of abstract forms. By isolating these elements, Lichtenstein strips away the emotional weight often associated with mid-century abstraction, replacing it with a cool, analytical approach to visual composition.
