A striking modernist study of light and shadow, featuring bold, saturated colours and simplified forms that capture the intensity of a sun-drenched street.
Martiros Saryan, a central figure in Armenian modernism, produced this work during his travels through the Middle East. The composition captures a narrow street at the height of the day, where the intense sun creates a stark contrast between the deep shadows of the buildings and the illuminated ground. Saryan employs a palette defined by high-chroma pigments, favouring bold, flat areas of colour over traditional modelling or perspective.
The deep blue of the sky, visible at the top of the frame, presses down into the narrow corridor of the street, while the ground is rendered in a striking, saturated orange. This choice of colour is characteristic of Saryan's approach to light, which prioritises emotional and atmospheric impact over naturalistic representation. The figures moving through the space are reduced to simplified silhouettes, their forms integrated into the geometric structure of the architecture.
This piece belongs to a period in Saryan's career when he moved away from the muted tones of his earlier training in Moscow, embracing the influence of the Fauves and the visual intensity of the East. By stripping away unnecessary detail, he focuses on the essential relationship between light and form. The result is a composition that feels both immediate and timeless, reflecting the artist's ability to distil complex scenes into their most potent visual components. The work remains a clear example of his departure from academic constraints, favouring a decorative, expressive use of paint that defines his mature style.
