Description
North Foreland stands above Kent's Thanet coast as a white lighthouse and keeper's house, with turquoise sea and distant chalk cliffs sharpening the contrast between land and water.
Above the cliffs of the Isle of Thanet, North Foreland has served shipping for centuries. Trinity House dates the present lighthouse to 1691 and records that it became the organisation's last staffed lighthouse to be automated, with the change formally marked in 1998.
White walls rise against clear blue, with a turquoise strip around the base and a dark roof on the adjoining house. The lantern's glass facets catch the daylight above a neat green lawn. Beyond the buildings, blue-green water meets distant chalk cliffs. Yellow flowering shrubs and full coastal vegetation suggest summer, while hard diagonal shadows give the lighthouse a strong three-dimensional presence.
