A powerful depiction of the Atlantic Ocean crashing against the Maine coastline, captured with energetic brushwork and a moody, atmospheric palette.
Winslow Homer painted Northeaster in 1895, following his move to Prout's Neck, Maine. This work captures the raw power of the Atlantic Ocean during a storm. Homer spent years observing the coastline, documenting the interaction between the sea and the jagged rock formations.
The composition focuses on the collision of water against the shore. A massive wave breaks against the dark, angular rocks, sending spray into the air. Homer used a palette of deep blues, greys, and whites to convey the cold, turbulent atmosphere. The brushwork is direct and energetic, reflecting the motion of the water. Unlike his earlier, more narrative works, this painting prioritises the physical presence of the sea.
Homer revised the painting after its initial exhibition in 1895. He added more foam and adjusted the rock formations to improve the sense of scale and force. The result is a study of natural energy. The viewer is positioned close to the action, creating a sense of immediacy. The lack of human figures allows the focus to remain entirely on the elemental struggle between the ocean and the land.
This piece is representative of Homer's later career, where he moved away from social commentary to focus on the observation of nature. His ability to render the weight and movement of water remains a defining characteristic of his work. The painting is currently held in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
