A pointillist cityscape by Maximilien Luce, depicting Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris. The painting captures the bustling atmosphere of the city with a muted palette and shimmering light effects.
Maximilien Luce (1858-1941) was a French Neo-Impressionist artist known for his paintings, graphic art, and illustrations. He began his artistic training as a wood engraver, later studying painting at the Académie Suisse and in the studio of Isidore Pils. Luce became associated with the Neo-Impressionist movement in the late 1880s, after meeting Camille Pissarro and other artists who were developing the pointillist technique. He exhibited with the Société des Artistes Indépendants and participated in the group's exhibitions. Luce's work often depicted urban scenes, industrial landscapes, and working-class subjects, reflecting his anarchist political beliefs. He used the pointillist style to capture the effects of light and atmosphere in these settings. This painting presents a view of Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris. The scene is rendered in a pointillist style, with small dots of colour creating a shimmering effect. The cathedral dominates the composition, its towers rising against a sky filled with clouds. The Seine River flows in the foreground, with boats and barges adding to the bustling atmosphere of the city. Figures populate the bridges and quays, suggesting the everyday life of Paris. The overall palette is muted, with blues, greens, and greys predominating, punctuated by touches of yellow and orange.
