A detailed etching by Auguste Louis Lepère, capturing the silhouette of Notre Dame Cathedral at dusk with atmospheric line work.
Auguste Louis Lepère was a master of the graphic arts, known for his technical precision in wood engraving and etching. This work captures the silhouette of Notre Dame Cathedral as evening descends upon Paris. The composition relies on a stark contrast between the dark, imposing mass of the cathedral and the atmospheric light of the sky. Lepère employs fine, dense hatching to define the architectural forms, while the foreground remains shrouded in shadow, suggesting the quiet movement of figures along the Seine.
Lepère was instrumental in the revival of original printmaking in France during the late nineteenth century. His approach to the cityscape often focused on the interplay of light and shadow, a technique he refined through years of commercial illustration and independent artistic practice. By choosing a low vantage point, he emphasises the scale of the cathedral against the Parisian sky. The etching process allows for a tactile quality in the lines, which capture the texture of the stone and the reflective surface of the water. This print offers a view of Paris that feels both immediate and timeless, avoiding the romanticised tropes often associated with the city. Instead, it presents a grounded, observational study of urban life at the turn of the century. The work reflects the artist's deep familiarity with the streets of Paris, demonstrating his ability to translate the mood of a specific time of day into a monochromatic medium. Through his controlled use of line and tone, Lepère creates a sense of depth that draws the viewer into the scene, inviting a quiet contemplation of the architecture and the surrounding environment.
