A striking lithograph by Koloman Moser, capturing a mood of quiet introspection through minimalist forms and textured, earthy tones.
November is a lithographic work by the Austrian artist Koloman Moser, a founding member of the Vienna Secession. Created around 1900, this piece reflects the stylistic shift occurring within the movement as artists moved away from traditional academic representation toward a more symbolic and graphic visual language. The composition features two cloaked figures standing within a dark, enclosed space. Their forms are rendered with textured, vertical mark-making that suggests heavy fabric or perhaps the shedding of autumn foliage.
The aesthetic is defined by a stark contrast between the muted, earthy tones of the figures and the deep, atmospheric void surrounding them. A vertical, lighter rectangular shape occupies the right side of the frame, introducing a sense of geometric order that balances the organic, slightly melancholic presence of the figures. The use of line is deliberate and restrained, typical of Moser's graphic design work for the journal Ver Sacrum.
This work captures a sense of quiet introspection. The figures appear isolated, their faces partially obscured, which invites the viewer to consider themes of transition and the onset of winter. The composition avoids unnecessary detail, focusing instead on the interplay of shape, texture, and negative space. It is a representative example of the graphic experimentation that defined the early years of the Secessionist movement in Vienna, where the boundaries between fine art and decorative design were frequently blurred. The print demonstrates Moser's ability to convey mood through minimal means, relying on the physical quality of the lithographic process to create a tactile, somber surface.
