Auguste Herbin
A 1951 geometric abstraction by Auguste Herbin, featuring a precise arrangement of primary shapes and colours against a black background.
Auguste Herbin, a French painter associated with the development of geometric abstraction, created this work in 1951. By this stage in his career, Herbin had moved away from his earlier experiments with Fauvism and Cubism, settling into a rigorous system of non-representational art. He developed a personal language where specific colours and geometric shapes corresponded to musical notes and letters, a theory he documented in his book, L'art non-figuratif non-objectif. In this composition, the artist arranges primary and secondary shapes against a stark black background. Circles, triangles, and rectangular bars are placed with precise intent. The work rejects traditional perspective, opting instead for a flat, balanced arrangement that prioritises the relationship between form and colour. The blue, red, and white elements interact to create a sense of rhythm, reflecting Herbin's interest in the structural parallels between visual art and musical composition. Herbin was a founding member of the Abstraction-Création group in Paris, which sought to promote non-figurative art during the 1930s. His later works, such as this one, demonstrate a commitment to clarity and order. The title, Nude, suggests a conceptual rather than literal interpretation of the subject. Rather than depicting the human form, Herbin uses his geometric vocabulary to evoke the essence of the figure through balance, proportion, and spatial harmony. The print captures the flat, opaque application of gouache characteristic of his later period, maintaining the integrity of the original colour fields.
