A bold, expressive oil painting by Ilya Mashkov featuring two figures rendered with heavy brushwork and a high-contrast colour palette.
Ilya Mashkov was a founding member of the Jack of Diamonds group, a collective that sought to break away from the academic traditions of the Russian art establishment. This work displays the characteristic energy and bold formal experimentation associated with his early career. The composition features two figures, one seated and one standing, rendered with a deliberate rejection of classical proportion in favour of expressive, sculptural volume. Mashkov employs a palette of high-contrast tones, using deep blues and blacks to frame the figures, while the skin tones are built from warm ochres, oranges, and pinks. The brushwork is heavy and confident, prioritising the physical presence of the paint over smooth transitions. The seated figure, viewed from behind, provides a sense of grounding, while the standing figure reaches upward, creating a dynamic vertical tension. The background is simplified into broad, gestural planes, which push the figures forward into the viewer's space. This painting reflects the influence of Paul Cézanne and Henri Matisse, both of whom were studied closely by the Jack of Diamonds artists. Mashkov adapts these European influences to create a distinctively robust style. The focus remains on the materiality of the subjects and the structural integrity of the composition. By stripping away extraneous detail, Mashkov directs attention to the interplay of light and shadow across the human form. The work remains an example of the early twentieth-century Russian avant-garde, capturing a moment when artists were actively redefining the boundaries of figurative representation through colour and form.
