A delicate sanguine study of a standing female figure by French sculptor Aristide Maillol, focusing on volume and classical proportion.
Aristide Maillol, primarily known for his sculptural practice, approached the human figure with a focus on volume and structural clarity. This study in sanguine, a traditional red chalk medium, demonstrates his preference for simplified, rounded forms. The figure is rendered with a soft, atmospheric quality, where the artist uses the texture of the paper to suggest the weight and presence of the body.
Maillol often returned to the female nude as his primary subject, seeking to capture a sense of timelessness rather than specific individual traits. The lines here are gentle, avoiding harsh contours in favour of subtle transitions between light and shadow. This approach allows the form to emerge from the page with a sense of quiet stability. The artist's hand is visible in the light, rhythmic hatching that defines the musculature and the gentle curve of the torso.
By stripping away extraneous detail, Maillol directs the viewer to the essential geometry of the human form. The composition is balanced and self-contained, reflecting his interest in classical ideals of proportion. The use of sanguine provides a warm, earthy tone that complements the organic nature of the subject. This work offers a glimpse into the preparatory process of an artist who sought to reconcile the traditions of classical sculpture with the sensibilities of the early twentieth century. It is a study of mass and balance, presented with a restraint that characterises much of his graphic output. The mark in the lower corner serves as a subtle identifier of the artist's hand, consistent with his documented sketches and drawings held in various international collections.
