A 1919 oil painting by Suzanne Valadon featuring two figures in a garden, rendered with bold outlines and expressive brushwork.
Suzanne Valadon, a former model for artists such as Renoir and Toulouse-Lautrec, developed a distinct approach to the female form that rejected the idealised aesthetics of her contemporaries. In this 1919 composition, she presents two figures within an outdoor setting. One figure sits upright, adjusting her hair, while the other reclines on the grass, occupied with a book or paper. The work is characterised by firm, assertive outlines and a palette that prioritises bold, non-naturalistic colour choices.
Valadon often focused on the physical reality of her subjects, choosing poses that appear unstudied and direct. The background, featuring a stone wall and dense foliage, is rendered with energetic, visible brushwork that creates a sense of movement. Her application of paint is heavy and deliberate, avoiding the soft blending common in academic painting of the period. This approach allows the figures to occupy the space with a sense of weight and presence.
By the time this piece was produced, Valadon had established herself as a significant figure in the Montmartre art scene. Her work frequently explored themes of domesticity and the female experience, often stripping away the decorative artifice that defined much of the era's portraiture. The contrast between the seated figure's active pose and the recumbent figure's quiet focus creates a balanced composition. The use of green tones in the foliage provides a stark backdrop for the warm, flesh-toned figures, ensuring they remain the primary focus of the viewer's attention. This print captures the raw, unvarnished quality of Valadon's original canvas, reflecting her unique position as both a subject and a creator within the history of modern French painting.
