A classic example of Jackson Pollock's action painting, featuring a dynamic web of black, white, and green enamel drips on a tan ground.
Number 17, produced in 1951, represents the mature phase of Jackson Pollock's career. During this period, the artist moved away from traditional easel painting, opting instead to place his canvases on the floor of his studio. This physical engagement allowed him to apply paint from all sides, using sticks, hardened brushes, and turkey basters to drip and pour liquid media directly onto the surface.
The composition is defined by a web of linear elements. Black, white, and green enamel lines traverse a tan-coloured ground, creating a sense of rhythmic movement across the picture plane. Unlike his earlier, more densely packed works, this piece allows for greater visibility of the negative space. The varying viscosity of the paint results in a surface that records the speed and force of the artist's gestures. The lines do not describe objects or figures, but rather document the physical process of their creation.
Pollock's technique, often termed action painting, shifted the focus of art from the finished image to the act of creation itself. By removing the brush from direct contact with the canvas, he achieved a fluid, continuous line that maintains a consistent energy. The interplay between the opaque black strokes and the lighter, more translucent green and white drips provides a sense of depth without relying on traditional perspective. This work remains a primary example of the artist's experimentation with gravity and fluid dynamics in the mid-twentieth century.
