A classical scene by Walter Crane, 'Often she would stand upon the walls of Troy' depicts Helen of Troy on the city walls, rendered in a decorative, linear style with a muted colour palette.
Walter Crane (1845-1915) was an English artist and book illustrator. He is considered one of the most influential children's book creators of his generation and, along with Kate Greenaway and Randolph Caldecott, is one of the strongest figures of children's literature. He was a proponent of the Arts and Crafts movement and produced an array of paintings, illustrations, children's books, ceramic tiles, and wallpaper. Crane's work often featured mythological or allegorical subjects rendered in a decorative, linear style. 'Often she would stand upon the walls of Troy' depicts a scene from classical mythology. A woman, presumably Helen of Troy, stands on the ramparts of the city. She is dressed in classical robes and holds a peacock feather fan. Behind her are two other women, and in the foreground are a spear, shield, and helmet. The composition is flat and decorative, with a muted colour palette. The figures are outlined with fine lines, and the overall effect is one of elegance and refinement.
