He was a proponent of the Arts and Crafts movement and produced an array of paintings, illustrations, children's books, ceramic tiles, and wallpaper. Crane's work often featured mythological or allegorical subjects rendered in a decorative, linear style. 'Often she would stand upon the walls of Troy' depicts a scene from classical mythology. A woman, presumably Helen of Troy, stands on the ramparts of the city. She is dressed in classical robes and holds a peacock feather fan.
