A detailed 1925 etching by Sidney L. Smith documenting the historic Old Corner Book Store in Boston as it appeared in 1850.
This etching by Sidney L. Smith depicts the historic Old Corner Book Store, situated at the intersection of Washington and School Streets in Boston. Executed in 1925, the work captures the architectural character of the building as it appeared in 1850. Smith, a skilled engraver and etcher, employs precise line work to render the timber-framed structure, its gabled roof, and the surrounding street activity of the mid-nineteenth century.
The composition focuses on the corner entrance, where the signage for Ticknor and Fields is visible. Pedestrians in period attire occupy the foreground, providing a sense of scale and historical context to the urban scene. The artist uses varied hatching techniques to suggest the texture of the building materials and the play of light across the facade. The print includes the mark of the Iconographic Society of Boston, which commissioned such works to document the city's changing architectural history.
Smith was known for his technical proficiency in intaglio processes. His approach here is documentary in nature, prioritising clarity and accuracy over atmospheric abstraction. The work functions as a visual record of a specific site that held cultural weight in Boston's literary history, having served as a gathering place for authors and publishers during the mid-1800s. The etching remains a clean, disciplined example of early twentieth-century American printmaking, reflecting a period interest in preserving local heritage through traditional graphic media.
