A realistic portrait of an elderly woman by Dutch painter Meijer de Haan, dated 1880, featuring a striking red shawl and traditional white cap.
Meijer de Haan, a Dutch painter who later became associated with the Pont-Aven School, produced this portrait in 1880. The work reflects his early training in the Netherlands, where he focused on realistic depictions of figures, often drawing from his own community. The subject is an elderly woman, rendered with a focus on the textures of her clothing and the weathered quality of her skin.
The composition uses a dark, atmospheric background that pushes the figure forward, creating a sense of intimacy. The woman wears a white cap tied beneath her chin, which frames her face and draws attention to her expression. A heavy, textured red shawl covers her shoulders, providing a strong colour contrast against the muted tones of her blouse and the surrounding shadows. De Haan employs a controlled brushwork technique, building up the paint to suggest the weight of the fabric and the subtle contours of the face.
This painting predates the artist's move to France and his subsequent friendship with Paul Gauguin. It demonstrates his technical proficiency during his formative years in Amsterdam. The lighting is directed from the upper left, casting soft shadows that define the structure of the face and the folds of the garments. The work avoids idealisation, choosing instead to capture the specific character of the sitter. It remains a clear example of the late nineteenth-century Dutch tradition of portraiture, which prioritised observation and tonal harmony over decorative artifice. The signature and date in the upper left corner confirm the period of its creation, marking a moment before his stylistic shift toward the more experimental approaches he would adopt later in his career.
