A detailed etching of an elderly man in a fur cap, produced from a plate associated with the historical Basan editions of Rembrandt's work.
This etching depicts an elderly man in profile, his head bowed and eyes closed, wearing a heavy fur cap. The work is a later impression, associated with the plates acquired and reworked by the French printmaker Henry Louis Basan in the early nineteenth century. Basan purchased many of Rembrandt's original copper plates, reprinting them to satisfy the growing European interest in the Dutch master's graphic output.
The image demonstrates the characteristic economy of line found in Rembrandt's original studies of character and physiognomy. The artist employs dense hatching to define the texture of the fur cap and the deep shadows cast across the subject's face. These marks create a sense of weight and volume, despite the small scale of the composition. The subject's posture, with his head inclined, suggests a moment of quiet contemplation or weariness. The signature, visible in the upper left, is a later addition to the plate, typical of the posthumous editions produced by the Basan workshop.
As a museum-grade fine art print, this piece offers a clear view into the techniques of seventeenth-century etching. The contrast between the dark, shadowed areas of the cloak and the lighter, more sparsely worked background directs the viewer's attention to the expressive features of the man. The paper tone and the visible plate mark provide an authentic sense of the historical printing process. This print is suitable for those who appreciate the technical precision of classical etching and the humanistic focus of the Dutch Golden Age. It functions as a study of light and form, capturing a fleeting expression with minimal means.
