A character study by Jan Lievens, this portrait captures an elderly woman in a turban, absorbed in reading, through the use of dramatic light and shadow.
Jan Lievens, a contemporary and associate of Rembrandt in Leiden, produced this study of an elderly woman engaged with a book. The work reflects the artist's interest in the 'tronie', a genre of painting that focuses on character studies, facial expressions, and the play of light rather than traditional portraiture or narrative scenes.
The subject is depicted in profile, her head wrapped in a striped turban that adds a sense of exoticism common in seventeenth-century Dutch art. Her gaze is fixed upon the open volume, her hands resting on the binding. Lievens employs a dramatic chiaroscuro technique, where the light source illuminates the texture of the woman's skin and the folds of her clothing, while the background remains obscured in shadow. This contrast draws the viewer's attention to the physical details of the subject, such as the weathered skin of her hands and the concentration on her face.
The palette is dominated by warm, earthy tones, with the muted purple of her garment providing a subtle chromatic shift against the browns and creams of the turban and the dark book. The brushwork is precise, capturing the weight of the book and the soft fabric of the headwear with equal attention. This piece demonstrates the technical skill Lievens possessed during his early career, a period marked by his close proximity to Rembrandt and their shared exploration of light and shadow. The composition is intimate, inviting the viewer to observe a quiet, private moment of study. It remains a representative example of the Dutch Golden Age interest in human character and the evocative power of light in painting.
