Félix Vallotton, a Swiss and French painter, printmaker, and sculptor, created 'On the Beach' in 1899. Vallotton was associated with the Post-Impressionist movement and the group of artists known as Les Nabis. His work often displays a distinctive style characterised by flat planes of colour, simplified forms, and a sense of detachment. 'On the Beach' depicts a scene of leisure and observation. Three figures are positioned on a beach, their backs turned to the viewer. To the left, a woman in a pink blouse and black skirt sits with a straw hat atop her head. Next to her, a child in a red hat and patterned shirt is seated. To the right, another woman, dressed in black and holding a yellow parasol, completes the composition. The sea stretches out behind them, rendered in a flat, green hue, with a small patch of blue sky visible above.
