A detailed 1827 etching by Johann Adam Klein depicting travellers and their pack animals by the shores of Lake Geneva.
Johann Adam Klein was a German painter and printmaker, widely recognised for his meticulous observations of daily life and animal studies. This etching, dated 1827, captures a quiet moment of transit along the shores of Lake Geneva. The composition focuses on a traveller mounted on a horse, accompanied by a companion who adjusts the heavy packs secured to a second animal. The figures stand near the water's edge, where a small sailing vessel is moored, laden with cargo.
Klein employs a precise, controlled line to define the textures of the animals' coats, the folds of the travellers' clothing, and the rigging of the boat. The scene reflects the Biedermeier interest in modest, everyday subjects and the documentation of travel during the early nineteenth century. The artist avoids dramatic flair, opting instead for a clear, balanced arrangement that allows the viewer to observe the practical details of the scene: the sturdy build of the pack animals, the simple attire of the figures, and the calm expanse of the lake in the background.
As a printmaker, Klein was highly skilled in the use of etching to convey atmospheric light and form. The subtle cross-hatching and varied line weights create a sense of depth without relying on heavy shadows. This work is characteristic of his output during his travels, where he documented the people and transport methods he encountered. The print offers a glimpse into the logistics of regional trade and movement in the 1820s, presented with an objective, observational eye. It remains a fine example of the technical proficiency and narrative clarity that defined Klein's graphic work throughout his career.
