A refined ink and colour study of lotus flowers by the seventeenth-century Chinese master Shitao, featuring fluid brushwork and classical calligraphy.
Shitao, born Zhu Ruoji, remains a figure of immense importance within the history of Chinese painting. As a member of the Ming dynasty imperial family who became a Buddhist monk following the fall of the dynasty, his work often reflects a sense of personal isolation and a rejection of rigid academic conventions. This piece, On the Lotus Pond, demonstrates his characteristic approach to the literati tradition, where the artist prioritises individual expression and spontaneity over strict adherence to established formulas.
The composition features a cluster of lotus flowers and broad leaves, rendered with a combination of fluid, calligraphic brushwork and subtle ink washes. Shitao employs a varied line quality, moving from the delicate, precise outlines of the petals to the bolder, more gestural strokes used to define the rocky outcrop. The presence of extensive calligraphy in the upper left section is integral to the work, serving as both a visual balance to the botanical subjects and a medium for the artist to express his philosophical reflections on nature and existence. The muted, earthy palette, typical of the period, allows the focus to remain on the interplay of light and shadow across the foliage.
Shitao was known for his theory of the single brushstroke, which he believed contained the essence of all things. In this work, one observes this philosophy in practice, as each mark appears deliberate yet unforced. The lotus, a symbol of purity in Chinese culture, is depicted here with a sense of naturalism that avoids excessive ornamentation. The work invites the viewer to engage with the quietude of the scene, reflecting the artist's own retreat from the political turmoil of the seventeenth century. By integrating text and image, Shitao creates a unified experience that speaks to the intellectual depth of the scholar-painter tradition.
