A detailed lithograph by Muirhead Bone depicting the industrial scale of a ship under construction in a shipyard.
Muirhead Bone was a Scottish artist known for his technical precision and his documentation of industrial subjects. During the First World War, he held the position of the first official war artist, tasked with recording the British war effort. This lithograph, On the Stocks, captures the immense scale of shipbuilding during this period. The composition focuses on the skeletal structure of a vessel under construction, surrounded by a dense network of timber scaffolding and cranes.
Bone employs a confident, calligraphic line to define the complex geometry of the shipyard. The heavy, dark ink work conveys the weight of the steel and the industrial atmosphere of the site. Smoke rises in the background, suggesting the constant activity of the docks. The artist avoids romanticising the scene, choosing instead to present the raw, mechanical reality of the construction process. The interplay between the vertical lines of the scaffolding and the curved hull of the ship creates a sense of depth and structural tension. This work is part of a larger series documenting the British naval production, reflecting the artist's ability to find order within the chaotic environment of a busy shipyard. The print demonstrates his mastery of lithography, using varying pressure to achieve a range of tones from deep blacks to lighter, sketch-like marks. It remains a clear example of early twentieth-century industrial art, documenting the intersection of human labour and large-scale engineering.
