A satirical lithograph by Honoré Daumier depicting the social friction of nineteenth-century rail travel through a man smoking beside an uncomfortable passenger.
Honoré Daumier, a master of French caricature and social observation, produced this lithograph during the mid-nineteenth century. The work captures a scene within a railway carriage, a setting that became a frequent subject for Daumier as he documented the changing social habits of Parisians during the industrial age. The composition features a man in a top hat, smoking a cigar, seated beside a woman who appears visibly distressed by the smoke and the cramped environment.
Daumier employs his characteristic draughtsmanship to convey the physical discomfort of the situation. The man is depicted with a self-satisfied, somewhat oblivious expression, his arms crossed and his body occupying a significant portion of the frame. In contrast, the woman is rendered with a pinched, anxious face, her posture rigid as she stares ahead. The swirling clouds of cigar smoke fill the upper portion of the print, creating a claustrophobic atmosphere that presses down on the two figures. Through his use of light and shadow, Daumier creates a sense of depth within the confined space of the train compartment.
This print belongs to a broader series of works in which Daumier examined the manners and inconveniences of modern travel. His ability to distill complex social dynamics into a single, humorous, yet biting image is evident here. The artist avoids overt moralising, preferring instead to present the scene with a sharp, observational eye. The lithographic process allows for a range of tonal values, from the deep blacks of the man's coat to the softer, greyish haze of the smoke. This piece offers a glimpse into the social tensions of the period, captured with the wit and technical precision that defined Daumier's career.
