A traditional Japanese woodblock print depicting a Kasa-obake, a sentient umbrella spirit from folklore, by the Kamigata artist Gosōtei Hirosada.
This woodblock print by Gosōtei Hirosada depicts a Kasa-obake, a traditional Japanese spirit or yokai. In folklore, these entities manifest as umbrellas that have reached their one-hundredth year, gaining sentience and a single leg. Hirosada, an artist active in the Kamigata region during the mid-nineteenth century, was known for his work within the ukiyo-e tradition, particularly his focus on kabuki actors and theatrical subjects.
The composition presents the figure against a dark, atmospheric background. The umbrella structure forms a conical frame around the central figure, with its ribs rendered in clean, vertical lines. The human-like face, with its distinct features and traditional hairstyle, emerges from the top of the umbrella, creating a surreal juxtaposition between the inanimate object and the expressive, lifelike visage. The artist employs a restrained colour palette, allowing the contrast between the dark canopy and the pale skin tones to define the form.
Hirosada's approach to this subject reflects the period interest in the supernatural and the grotesque, themes frequently explored in popular literature and theatre of the Edo period. The print demonstrates the technical precision of the woodblock medium, with clear outlines and flat areas of colour typical of the genre. This work provides an example of the imaginative capacity of Japanese printmakers to transform everyday objects into characters of myth and legend. The print is a study in characterisation, capturing a sense of stillness that contrasts with the inherently bizarre nature of the subject matter. It remains a curious piece of cultural history, illustrating the intersection of folklore and artistic expression in nineteenth-century Japan.
