A 1552 engraving by Heinrich Aldegrever depicting the allegory of Intemperance, featuring a figure mounted on a boar with symbolic heraldry.
This engraving by Heinrich Aldegrever, dated 1552, depicts the allegorical figure of Onmatigheid, or Intemperance. As a member of the Little Masters, a group of German printmakers known for their small-scale, highly detailed works, Aldegrever demonstrates his technical precision through the fine lines and controlled hatching characteristic of the period. The figure is shown mounted upon a wild boar, a traditional symbol of gluttony and lack of restraint. She carries a standard emblazoned with a hedgehog, further reinforcing the theme of unbridled appetite.
The composition is balanced by the inclusion of a coat of arms featuring an owl, which often serves as a warning against folly or moral blindness. In the background, a slender obelisk provides a vertical counterpoint to the central figure, while the surrounding landscape remains minimal to keep the focus on the allegorical narrative. The artist employs a clear, linear style that prioritises clarity of form over atmospheric effects. This work is part of a series exploring the vices, a common subject in sixteenth-century print culture that sought to provide moral instruction through visual metaphor. The precise rendering of the drapery and the textures of the animal forms reveal the influence of Albrecht Dürer, whose work set the standard for German engraving during this era. Aldegrever manages to pack a significant amount of symbolic information into a small format, creating a work that functions as both a technical exercise and a didactic image. The print reflects the intellectual climate of the Reformation era, where moral allegories were frequently produced for a growing market of collectors who valued both artistic skill and philosophical content.
