Hendrik Cornelisz. Vroom is widely recognised as the father of Dutch marine painting. This drawing, titled Oorlogsschip op zee, demonstrates his technical mastery of naval architecture and maritime movement. Vroom spent his early career travelling through Europe, including time in Italy, where he absorbed the influence of contemporary cartographers and painters. Upon his return to the Netherlands, he focused his practice on the depiction of ships, a subject that held immense cultural and economic weight for the Dutch Republic during the seventeenth century.

The composition captures a warship navigating choppy waters. Vroom employs a delicate pen and ink technique to delineate the rigging, masts, and hull, while light washes of watercolour provide volume to the sails and the rolling sea. The inclusion of smoke billowing from the vessel suggests an active engagement or a demonstration of artillery, a common motif in his work to convey the power of the Dutch fleet. The artist pays close attention to the specific construction of the vessel, reflecting his deep understanding of ship design, which was informed by his own experiences at sea.
