A 1921 Synthetic Cubist oil painting by Juan Gris, featuring a still life of a bottle, book, and violin set against an open window with distant hills.
Juan Gris, born José Victoriano González-Pérez, was a central figure in the development of Synthetic Cubism. This work, painted in 1921, demonstrates his methodical approach to the movement. Unlike the fragmented, monochromatic works of early Cubism, Gris utilised a more structured, architectural method of composition. He often began with a mathematical grid before applying his subjects, which allowed for a controlled balance between the objects and the surrounding space.
The composition features a still life arranged on a table before an open window. A bottle, a book, and a violin are rendered with flattened perspectives, overlapping to create a sense of spatial ambiguity. The exterior view, showing rolling hills, provides a contrast to the domestic items inside. Gris employs a palette of muted greens, browns, and soft purples, which unify the disparate elements of the scene. The ironwork of the balcony railing adds a decorative, linear element that anchors the background.
Gris was known for his analytical rigour. He did not seek to replicate reality but to construct a new visual language through the arrangement of geometric forms. This painting reflects his mature period, where the initial harshness of Cubist fragmentation gave way to a more lyrical, harmonious organisation of colour and shape. The curtains framing the window serve to draw the viewer into the interior space, creating a dialogue between the private world of the table and the public view beyond. His work remains a primary example of how the Cubist idiom could be adapted to create stable, rhythmic, and highly ordered compositions.
