A late etching by Samuel Palmer depicting a shepherd releasing his flock at twilight, rendered with precise cross-hatching and atmospheric depth.
Opening the Fold is a late etching by Samuel Palmer, completed in 1880. It represents the artist's return to the pastoral themes that occupied his early career, though executed with the technical precision of his mature years. The scene depicts a shepherd releasing his flock at twilight, a subject Palmer explored throughout his life.
The composition is defined by a dense network of lines. Palmer uses cross-hatching to build shadow and texture, creating a sense of atmosphere that feels both heavy and luminous. The shepherd stands to the right, playing a pipe, while the sheep occupy the foreground. Beyond them, the eye travels across a valley toward a distant, jagged mountain range. The sky is filled with fine, horizontal strokes that suggest the fading light of day.
This work belongs to a series of etchings based on Virgil's Eclogues, reflecting Palmer's interest in classical literature and the English countryside. The level of detail in the foliage and the sheep demonstrates his mastery of the etching needle. Unlike his earlier, more visionary works, this piece displays a controlled, classical approach to light and form. The contrast between the dark, textured foreground and the lighter, more ethereal distance creates a sense of depth. It is a quiet, contemplative image that captures a moment of transition in the natural world. The print is a fine example of Victorian etching, showing the artist's ability to manipulate light through pure line work without the use of tone or wash.
