A modernist study of a Spanish vendor, featuring bold geometric forms and a striking palette of yellow, blue, and green.
Natalia Goncharova produced this work during her period of fascination with Spanish culture, a theme that occupied her throughout the mid-1910s. The composition reflects her synthesis of folk art traditions with the structural rigour of European avant-garde movements. By this stage in her career, Goncharova had moved beyond her earlier experiments in Neo-Primitivism, adopting a more fragmented approach to form that echoes the principles of Cubism and her own development of Rayonism. The figure of the vendor is presented through a series of interlocking planes and geometric shapes. Her garments, adorned with stylised floral motifs, are rendered in flat areas of colour that contrast with the more angular, architectural elements of the background. The basket of oranges atop her head serves as a central anchor for the composition, balancing the verticality of the figure against the surrounding blue and green fields. Goncharova employs a deliberate lack of traditional perspective, choosing instead to flatten the pictorial space to emphasise the decorative potential of the subject matter. This piece demonstrates the artist's ability to balance representational clarity with abstract design. The bold use of yellow, blue, and green creates a sense of energy, while the heavy outlines define the boundaries between the vendor and her environment. Rather than attempting a realistic depiction, Goncharova focuses on the rhythm of the shapes and the interplay of light across the surface. The work remains a clear example of her stylistic versatility and her engagement with the visual languages of early twentieth-century modernism.
