Natalia Goncharova produced this work during her period of fascination with Spanish culture, a theme that occupied her throughout the mid-1910s. The composition reflects her synthesis of folk art traditions with the structural rigour of European avant-garde movements. By this stage in her career, Goncharova had moved beyond her earlier experiments in Neo-Primitivism, adopting a more fragmented approach to form that echoes the principles of Cubism and her own development of Rayonism.
