A serene depiction of the imperial gardens at Oranienbaum, capturing the quiet atmosphere of Russian parkland through a Symbolist lens.
Konstantin Somov, a founding member of the Mir Iskusstva (World of Art) group, frequently turned his attention to the formal gardens of the Russian imperial estates. This work depicts the grounds of Oranienbaum, a residence near Saint Petersburg. Somov employs a deliberate, stylised approach to the park setting, moving away from strict realism to capture a mood of quiet, historical reflection. The composition is anchored by the deep, elongated shadows cast across the foreground, which contrast with the bright, almost artificial blue of the sky.
In the middle ground, classical statuary punctuates the path, serving as silent observers within the manicured environment. The architecture, partially obscured by the dense foliage, hints at the grandeur of the eighteenth-century Russian court, a period that held a particular fascination for Somov and his contemporaries. His technique here, likely using gouache, allows for a matte finish that emphasises the flat, decorative quality of the scene. The trees are rendered in dark, muted tones, creating a sense of enclosure that draws the viewer into the stillness of the park.
Somov often explored themes of nostalgia and the passage of time. By focusing on these decaying or preserved aristocratic spaces, he creates a bridge between the past and the early twentieth-century aesthetic. The work avoids the sentimentality often found in academic painting of the era, opting instead for a precise, almost theatrical arrangement of light and shadow. This print captures the specific atmosphere of the Russian summer, where the long shadows of the evening suggest a world caught in a state of perpetual, elegant suspension.
