A refined seventeenth-century portrait engraving of the painter Orazio Gentileschi, executed by Lucas Vorsterman I after a design by Anthony van Dyck.
This portrait engraving depicts the Italian painter Orazio Gentileschi, a figure associated with the Caravaggisti movement who spent his later years in London at the court of Charles I. The print is part of the Iconography, a series of portraits of famous contemporaries initiated by Anthony van Dyck. Lucas Vorsterman I, a skilled printmaker who collaborated closely with Van Dyck, executed this plate with technical precision.
The composition follows the conventions of seventeenth-century portraiture. Gentileschi is shown in a three-quarter view, his gaze directed towards the viewer with a sense of gravity. The artist wears a simple collar and a draped garment, rendered through varied hatching techniques that define the volume of the fabric and the contours of his face. The background is kept minimal, consisting of a vertical architectural element that provides a sense of depth without distracting from the subject. The Latin inscription at the base identifies the sitter as Horatius Gentileschi, an Italian painter of human figures in England, and acknowledges the roles of Van Dyck as the painter and Vorsterman as the engraver.
Vorsterman demonstrates his mastery of the burin and etching needle here. The lines are controlled and deliberate, creating subtle gradations of tone that model the sitter's features. The work captures the intellectual character of the subject, reflecting the refined aesthetic of the period. As a piece of the Iconography, it serves as a record of the artistic circles that flourished in Europe during the early seventeenth century. The print is a fine example of the collaborative nature of print production in the Baroque era, where the synergy between a painter and a specialist engraver allowed for the wide dissemination of portraiture among the educated classes.
