A dark, atmospheric depiction of the Greek hero Orestes pursued by the Furies, rendered in the dramatic, psychological style of German Symbolism.
Franz von Stuck, a founding member of the Munich Secession, frequently turned to classical mythology to explore themes of psychological torment and primal human emotion. In this work, he depicts the Greek hero Orestes, who is pursued by the Erinyes, or Furies, following the matricide of Clytemnestra. The composition is defined by a sense of claustrophobic urgency, with the figures emerging from a dark, atmospheric void that suggests a dreamlike or nightmarish state.
The Erinyes are rendered with a raw, unsettling physicality. Their pale, contorted forms contrast sharply against the murky, shadowed background, creating a visual tension that mirrors the internal state of the protagonist. Orestes himself appears caught in a desperate flight, his expression one of grim resignation rather than simple fear. Von Stuck employs a heavy, gestural application of paint, which contributes to the overall sense of unease and instability within the scene.
This painting reflects the broader interest in the darker aspects of the human psyche that characterised much of the Symbolist movement at the turn of the twentieth century. By focusing on the moment of psychological collapse, the artist moves away from traditional, heroic depictions of myth. Instead, he presents a visceral interpretation of guilt and retribution. The limited, sombre palette, punctuated by the stark pallor of the Furies, ensures that the viewer remains focused on the emotional weight of the narrative. The work remains a compelling example of how classical subjects were reinterpreted through the lens of modern psychological inquiry during the early 1900s.
