George Catlin painted this portrait of Osceola, the Seminole leader, in 1838. Catlin travelled extensively across North America during the 1830s, documenting the lives and appearances of various Indigenous peoples. His objective was to create a visual record of cultures he believed were disappearing due to the expansion of the United States.

In this portrait, Osceola is depicted in a three-quarter view against a neutral, muted background. The subject wears a red turban adorned with a prominent white and black feather, a garment that became synonymous with his public image. His attire includes a patterned shawl and a dark sash decorated with silver-coloured metal ornaments. Several crescent-shaped gorgets hang around his neck, reflecting the status and trade connections of the Seminole people during this period.

Catlin utilised a relatively restrained palette, focusing on the textures of the fabric and the metallic sheen of the jewellery. The lighting is soft, directed towards the face to capture the subject's expression. This work is part of the larger collection Catlin assembled, which he later exhibited as his 'Indian Gallery'. The portrait provides a specific historical record of Osceola, who was a central figure in the Second Seminole War.
