A graphite sketch by Johan Daniël Koelman depicting a team of oxen pulling a heavy stone block on a cart.
This graphite sketch by the Dutch artist Johan Daniël Koelman captures a utilitarian scene from the nineteenth century. The composition focuses on a heavy cart pulled by a team of oxen, carrying a large, singular block of stone. Koelman employs a light, gestural line to define the forms of the animals and the cart, prioritising movement and the weight of the load over precise finish. The drawing provides a glimpse into the manual labour and transport methods of the period, reflecting the artist's interest in documenting everyday life and rural activity.
Koelman, active during the mid-to-late nineteenth century, often produced studies that served as preparatory work for larger compositions or as personal observations of his surroundings. The sketch is characterised by its economy of line, where the artist uses minimal strokes to suggest the anatomy of the oxen and the structural bulk of the stone. The perspective is slightly elevated, allowing the viewer to observe the strain of the animals as they navigate the terrain. The paper remains largely unworked, keeping the focus entirely on the subject matter. This work is typical of the period's academic approach to sketching, where the artist sought to capture the essence of a subject through rapid, observational drawing. It offers an authentic look at the artist's process, revealing how he constructed form and motion through simple graphite marks. The lack of heavy shading or complex detail allows the viewer to appreciate the draftsmanship and the artist's ability to convey volume with only a few well-placed lines.
