A traditional Japanese Ōtsu-e folk painting depicting the Nirvana of the Buddha through a satirical and expressive lens, featuring a diverse assembly of figures.
This work represents the Ōtsu-e tradition, a style of folk painting originating from the town of Ōtsu near Kyoto. These paintings were traditionally produced for travellers along the Tōkaidō road, often serving as protective charms or satirical commentaries on social and religious themes. In this composition, the artist Hakuen depicts the Nirvana of the Buddha, a subject typically reserved for formal religious iconography, yet here it is rendered with the characteristic humour and stylistic simplicity of the Ōtsu-e genre.
The central scene shows the reclining Buddha surrounded by a diverse assembly of mourners. Unlike traditional Buddhist art, which maintains a solemn tone, this version includes a chaotic mix of figures, including demons, animals, and various folk characters. The inclusion of these figures reflects the inclusive nature of the Ōtsu-e style, which frequently blended Buddhist motifs with popular folklore and caricature. The composition is vertically oriented, with the main event situated in the centre, while the upper portion features a pagoda and celestial figures, and the lower section is populated by a menagerie of animals, including an elephant and a tiger, participating in the scene.
The brushwork is bold and direct, prioritising clarity and expressive characterisation over anatomical precision. The palette remains muted, relying on earthy tones and subtle washes of colour to define the figures against the paper ground. This piece captures the intersection of religious narrative and popular culture, providing a glimpse into the visual vernacular of nineteenth-century Japan. It functions as a playful subversion of high-art religious themes, typical of the irreverent spirit found in the Ōtsu-e workshops of the period.
