A classic woodblock print from Hiroshige's Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido series, depicting the bustling Hashirii teahouse in Otsu.
This woodblock print is part of the celebrated series, Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido, produced by Utagawa Hiroshige during the 1830s. The series documents the route between Edo and Kyoto, capturing the daily activities and atmospheric conditions encountered by travellers along the way. This specific scene depicts the Hashirii teahouse in Otsu, the final stop before reaching the destination of Kyoto.
Hiroshige presents a busy scene of commerce and rest. Ox-drawn carts laden with goods move along the road, while patrons gather within the open-fronted structure of the teahouse. The composition balances the architectural forms of the thatched-roof buildings with the organic shapes of the pine trees and bamboo thickets. A figure in the foreground washes items in a basin, adding a sense of domestic activity to the roadside setting. The use of colour is restrained, relying on soft blues for the sky and muted earth tones for the structures and ground, which creates a harmonious visual experience.
The print demonstrates the technical skill of the Edo-period woodblock process, where multiple carved blocks were used to build the image layer by layer. Hiroshige was known for his ability to infuse travel scenes with a sense of place and human narrative. By focusing on the mundane details of the teahouse, he provides a window into the social life of the Tokaido road. This work remains a primary example of the ukiyo-e genre, which sought to capture the fleeting moments of the floating world. The print is presented here with the clarity and detail of the original edition, preserving the subtle gradients and line work characteristic of Hiroshige's output.
