A detailed seventeenth-century topographical drawing of the Amsterdam harbour and the Sint Antoniespoort by Jan Gabrielsz. Sonjé.
This drawing by Jan Gabrielsz. Sonjé captures a specific view of the old yacht harbour in Amsterdam during the mid-seventeenth century. The composition focuses on the architectural presence of the Sint Antoniespoort, a structure that served as a city gate before its conversion into the Waag. Sonjé employs a delicate use of pen and ink, supplemented by subtle washes to define the spatial relationships between the water, the embankment, and the buildings.
The artist demonstrates a clear interest in the topographical accuracy of the Dutch urban environment. The inclusion of small boats on the water provides a sense of scale and daily activity, contrasting with the solid, static nature of the stone fortifications. The trees and foliage are rendered with light, rhythmic strokes, suggesting the soft textures of nature against the rigid geometry of the city walls. A windmill is visible in the distance, a common feature of the Dutch horizon during this period, which adds to the historical character of the scene.
Sonjé, active in Delft and Rotterdam, was known for his ability to document the changing face of Dutch cities. This work reflects the period's fascination with local geography and the quiet observation of everyday life. The monochromatic palette emphasises the structural clarity of the drawing, allowing the viewer to focus on the interplay of light and shadow across the harbour walls. It is a precise record of a location that has undergone significant transformation since the seventeenth century, offering a glimpse into the maritime history of Amsterdam.
