A detailed Pre-Raphaelite study of sheep grazing on the Sussex cliffs, capturing the specific light and texture of the English coastline.
William Holman Hunt painted Our English Coasts, 1852, also known as Strayed Sheep, during a period of intense focus on natural observation. The work depicts a flock of sheep grazing upon the cliffs near Hastings. Hunt spent months working outdoors to capture the specific quality of light and the precise details of the coastal flora and fauna. The composition balances the expansive view of the sea with the immediate, tactile presence of the sheep and the tangled vegetation in the foreground.
Technically, the painting demonstrates the Pre-Raphaelite approach to colour and finish. Hunt applied paint over a wet white ground to maintain luminosity, resulting in a surface that retains its clarity. The sheep are rendered with individualised textures, from the coarse wool to the subtle variations in their markings. The cliffside, bathed in sunlight, contrasts with the shadows cast by the sheep and the dense growth of brambles.
Beyond the literal depiction of the Sussex coast, the painting carries allegorical weight. The sheep, some of which have wandered away from the safety of the flock, suggest themes of vulnerability and the need for guidance. Hunt intended the work to function as a commentary on the state of the nation, specifically regarding the perceived lack of protection for the English coastline. Despite these layers of meaning, the primary appeal of the piece remains its rigorous attention to the physical world. The artist captures the specific atmosphere of a summer day, where the clarity of the air and the brightness of the sun define every leaf and blade of grass. This print reproduces the fine detail and the specific colour palette of the original oil painting, allowing for a close examination of Hunt's meticulous brushwork.
