A visceral work by Breyten Breytenbach, featuring a distorted, expressive figure set against a dark, symbolic background.
Breyten Breytenbach, a South African poet, writer, and painter, employs a raw, visceral visual language in his artistic practice. This work, titled Out in the evening II, demonstrates his characteristic approach to the human form, which he often distorts to convey psychological states or existential unease. The central figure is rendered with fluid, almost liquefying features, suggesting a state of transition or dissolution. The application of paint is gestural, with visible brushwork that prioritises emotional expression over anatomical precision.
The background features a dark, semi-circular arch populated by repetitive, circular motifs that resemble rudimentary trees or perhaps cellular structures. This framing device creates a sense of enclosure, pushing the distorted figure into the foreground. The colour palette is dominated by deep, moody purples and greens, which contrast with the pale, flesh-toned hues of the figure. The presence of a prominent, bone-like protrusion extending from the head adds a surreal, unsettling quality to the composition.
Breytenbach’s work is frequently informed by his experiences as an anti-apartheid activist and his time spent in solitary confinement. These biographical elements often manifest in his art through themes of isolation, bodily fragility, and the struggle for identity. The lack of clear spatial depth and the focus on the singular, agonised subject align with the traditions of twentieth-century Expressionism. By stripping away conventional beauty, the artist forces the viewer to confront the raw materiality of the paint and the vulnerability of the subject. This piece is a representative example of his ability to translate complex internal experiences into a tangible, visual format, maintaining a balance between abstraction and recognisable human form.
